Gender in Politics

This module offers students a practical immersion in international diplomacy by simulating the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). Through this simulation, students assume the role of country representatives, critically examining the status of women’s rights within a selected nation (excluding the U.S.) that has ratified the CEDAW agreement.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • In-depth Analysis: Students will prepare and present reports on the current status of women in their chosen country, including improvements or declines and the underlying causes.
  • Diplomatic Communication: By discussing these reports in a committee format, students engage in real-world diplomatic discourse, building skills in public speaking and negotiation.
  • Policy Solutions: Each delegate will propose actionable recommendations to further improve women’s rights in alignment with CEDAW goals.

Structure & Requirements:

  • Presentation Style: This is a seated, report-based presentation (no PowerPoint). Each student will use a written report to support their five-minute speech without reading directly from it, promoting natural, engaging delivery.
  • Preparation: Students are encouraged to research the impact of national policies on gender equality and prepare a 2-3 page report.

Through this simulation, students gain hands-on experience in policy evaluation, critical analysis, and international relations, positioning them to understand and contribute to global gender equality initiatives.
