Summer School: “Energy Transition Towards Sustainability”

The University of Cologne’s Institute of Energy Economics (EWI), in partnership with the International Office, hosted a summer school titled “Energy Transition Towards Sustainability: Renewable Energies and Energy Market Design.” This program centered on exploring renewable energy solutions for a sustainable future, with a specific focus on the development of hydrogen markets in Egypt and Germany. Participants examined hydrogen’s role as a future energy carrier and its potential for global trade.

Funded by the DAAD under the Building a Sustainable Energy Future (BaSEF) project, this summer school brought together institutions from the British University in Egypt, the American University in Cairo, and the University of Cologne. BaSEF aligns closely with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Egypt Vision 2030 by promoting sustainable energy, fostering global partnerships, and advancing innovation in energy research.

This initiative aims to equip junior researchers with knowledge in:

  1. The urgent need for climate action.
  2. Technological solutions for a sustainable energy mix, preparing them to drive research in renewable energy, climate resilience, and mitigation strategies.
