Climate change is one of the biggest problems facing our planet in the 21st century. We live in a time of unprecedented global warming and weather fluctuations that threaten food production, cause forest fires, and increase the overall sea levels across the world. One of the most significant contributors to this phenomenon are the anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions caused by the transportation sectors. That’s why our Faculty of Engineering and the Centre for Renewable Energy (CRE) are taking action by developing a pilot photovoltaic solar station for charging electric cars, reducing the overall level of gas emissions.
This solar station has been installed on-campus on the roof of Building B, consisting of 14 solar panels that have the ability to charge a 12-battery electric vehicle in just 3 hours! The project supports our very own University vehicles by securing a clean energy supply source that uses green solar energy.
The project is funded by the Science, Technology & Innovation Funding Authority (STDF), with a team made up of Dr. Rania Rushdy Moussa, Project Principal Investigator, Professor Iman El Mahalawy, Director of the Centre for Renewable Energy, Professor Amr Abdelkader, Director of the Centre for Preventive Maintenance (CPM), Dr. Ahmad ElShamy, Eng. Mahmoud Elthakaby, Eng. Seif Tarek, and Eng. Engy Samy.
