The British University in Egypt is a leading higher education institution that supported COP27 in Egypt through its activities, partnerships, academic programs and leadership which ensured the successful delivery of the COP27 outcomes
The BUE Climate Week, witnessed two key events in which the BUE Run for Climate was the inaugural one, which provides a clear example of how universities can contribute actively to providing solutions to climate change challenges. The event was planned with a clear strategy to cover different aspects representing the educational, research and community roles of higher education institutions. The planning process extended through the period of April-October 2022; the call for the event was launched by an MoU signing event with CairoRunners on August 2022. The run itself was carried out on the 14th of October 2022. The event was in partnership with the UNDP and was delivered on ground by one of the MENA largest marathon organizers, CairoRunners, to ensure excellent and professional delivery. On the other hand, the contribution of different stakeholders, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the British council and the British Embassy in Egypt, resulted in positive outcomes aligned with the objectives of COP27.
The event was designed to be inclusive and accessible, with a range of activities planned to suit different abilities and interests. It had a clear objective to spread awareness about climate change and sustainable development goals among the participants. Additionally, the event was organized to be climate-friendly with the purpose of normalizing such events nationally and increasing the level of community engagement in achieving SDGs.
The run turned to be the largest public free-of-charge thematic run in Egypt to date, with over 7000 participants from various communities, including international schools from Cairo, two sports clubs, university students, families, university staff members, and professional runners. Beside the 10k, 5k and the family run, two parallel activities took place: the Art for Climate open exhibition and the Green Bazaar. These engaging activities showcased the work of students, local artists, active start-ups in addition to expert opinions to increase awareness and involvement of participants in the climate cause
The Green Bazaar featured clean energy student projects, including solar-powered water desalination units, wind turbine models, biological-energy cell models and student poster presentations about the SDGs and climate change. The Art for climate included sustainable fashion workshops, and green art activities by local artists, BUE students and university staff members.
Participants received hands-on experience for creative solutions to common challenges related to climate change and sustainable development, and how they can contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. Such a sports event provides a model for other higher education institutions in community engagement and promotion of the SDGs in Egypt and beyond.
In conclusion, the BUE Run for Climate event demonstrated excellence in planning, strategy, and delivery, resulting in positive inclusion of stakeholders, fulfillment of objectives, and delivery of outcomes that pave the way for similar thematic future events.
