The British University in Egypt: Toward Becoming A Green Campus

The British University in Egypt is actively dedicating itself to a greener future through a comprehensive strategy focused on integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into every aspect of campus life. Our goal, “Towards Going Green BUE through SDGs integration,” is transforming our campus into a model of sustainability.

This initiative is built on a number of primary action pillars: Energy Efficiency, Material Waste Reduction, and Community Involvement. We are implementing energy-efficient practices across the board, from upgrading existing facilities to demanding high standards for new construction. Simultaneously, we are deeply focused on reducing overall campus waste and dramatically promoting recycling programs.

To ensure this commitment translates into lasting change, we have established rigorous operational steps. We are regularly documenting all sustainability activities and maintaining a strong focus on developing energy-efficient infrastructure. Beyond the physical plant, our research efforts are specifically targeted to explore the social aspects of sustainability, ensuring our solutions are holistic and equitable. We are continually working to evaluate the current environmental impact of the university, using data to guide our strategies. Most importantly, this is a collective effort: we are committed to actively involving faculty, staff, and local communities in all phases of our green transition.

Our deep commitment to sustainability is further cemented by our strategic focus on Research and Academic excellence. The British University in Egypt was the first university in the region to commit to the SDGs through a formal Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). We host dedicated research centers, including the Farouk El-Baz Centre for Sustainability and Future Studies, which explores environmental, economic, and social sustainability, and the Centre for Renewable Energy, which researches energy-efficient systems. This academic focus is directly translated through our Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering, which offers specialized programs, including dual bachelor’s degrees in Renewable Energy and Sustainable Building Design.

Our campus culture reinforces these principles through vibrant initiatives and student involvement. The Greenish club, a dynamic student organization, actively promotes environmental awareness and advocates for sustainable practices on campus through education and advocacy. Furthermore, the university promotes sustainable living by providing simple, actionable tips for students, such as utilizing energy-efficient LED bulbs and adopting the habit of unplugging electronics when not in use. This integrated approach, linking top-tier research, focused academic programs, and active student participation, solidifies the British University in Egypt’s position as a truly green and future-focused campus.
